Henry A. Matthews, Art Gallery Director of Galleries and Collections

The first public showing of this important and generous gift of art will be an exhibition titled Shared Passion: A Gift of the Stuart & Barbara Padnos Foundation Collection presented in the Art Gallery of the Performing Arts Center, August 22 – October 31, 2014 on the university’s Allendale campus. The installation is an integral part of the university’s annual Fall Arts Celebration. After the conclusion of the exhibition all works will be dispersed for public display throughout Zumberge Hall. In 2013, Grand Valley State University received a remarkable donation of 35 works of twentieth century art from the Stuart & Barbara Padnos Foundation. Businessman and philanthropist Stuart Padnos and his wife, Barbara, thoughtfully amassed a notable art collection throughout their long marriage that filled their waterfront home on Lake Macatawa in Holland, Michigan. The collecting, display and utilization of authentic works of art from around the world in support of interdisciplinary learning has become an expected and cherished element of a Grand Valley State University education. Begun under the leadership of President Emeritus Arend Lubbers more than 20 years ago and supported by both of his successors and their administrations, our university-wide art program has grown to encompass a collection of more than 12,000 original works of art displayed and exhibited in 120 buildings located on the university’s seven campuses located in six Michigan cities.  Read more …
